It’s a Beautiful Day

I’ve been having a fantastic day with SLIS.  It is the day of orientation for the new graduate students, and I am so excited for the new class.  I was really dreading classes for the fall, but meeting new people who are excited about classes, learning, and librarianship has rejuvenated my passion for the profession.

I know I am making a difference here at SLIS.  I can feel it now, and I didn’t really feel important before.  Helping students by giving them advice for good courses to take as well as getting involved and starting a new student group has been greatly beneficial.  I really do hope the class of 2013 thrives here and enjoyes themselves.

The organization fair is about to begin, and once that ends…I am thrilled to enjoy the fajita bar from Pasqual’s for dinner.  Yumm!

Livin’ Up Like It’s the Weekend

I apologize for the lack of posts recently; I had a very fun and very busy weekend.

Friday, my sister came into town to visit.  We had a delicious dinner at The Old Fashioned, had a few pitchers with work friends at the Terrace, and had hours of catching up and talking.  Saturday morning, we hit up the Capitol Square Farmers Market, ran errands all around the city, and got to have fun doing so.  It’s sad that Tiff left some of her veggies here in Madison, though.

Tiff and I at the Terrace together.

My amazing co-workers: Me, Ian, Ashley, and Kim.

Saturday afternoon, Marlea and I had a great pool date at the Middleton Pool.  I seriously have the best tan this summer than I have ever had.  I’m planning on getting some more sun and pool on this coming weekend.  I need a break from traveling around everywhere, and spending a weekend home by myself is just what I need.

Sunday, Sam came back from BLTW in North Carolina.  We had a cute pizza date for dinner and fell asleep quickly in all of the heat.  It was great to see him, and I loved hearing how excited he is to make major changes with Sigma Chi.  (I really am so proud of him!)

Monday, I assisted with the Distance Student Bootcamp for SLIS.  It is great to meet my future classmates and help them get acclimated to Madison for their week here.  After, I got a lot done around town and for work.  Then, Sam and I headed to Milwaukee, picked up Kasen and Matt, and were on our way to the Brewers/Cardinals game.  It was a fun game, loved seeing the boys, but an happy to be back in Madison today.

I’m slowly, but surely, crossing things off of my to-do list.  It’s been busy around here.  Like everyone else, I’m going to blame the weather and construction.

Loving Learning to be a Librarian

I know that the title of my blog is “Learning to be a Librarian,” but this summer I’ve truly loved learning.  I cannot be more grateful for the opportunities I have had at the University of Wisconsin, and I absolutely love it here.  To help students who may be interested in library science, especially at the University of Wisconsin, here are my reasons why:

Location:  I absoultely love living in the city of Madison.  The Saturday morning Farmer’s Market on the Square is amazing, being surrounded by four lakes is perfect in the summer, and the snowball fights in the winter make Madison magical.  The transportation services are fantastic for students, and I only need a car to run major errands and drive to see Sam.  Madison is a college town, but it is no wonder so many graduates stay in town after they graduate.

Networking: I have opportunities to attend mini-conferences on campus almost every week during the academic year.  I also attend different meetings on campus due to my interest in utilizing social media in the context to better higher education.  Through those meetings, and attending state-wide library conferences, I have been able to make connections throughout the state, and beyond, to assist me in the future.  I have also been able to meet others who, I believe, will make large impacts on the field.

Working: Talking to a student who attends UI-UC, she does have a fully-funded position where she works a job that she is happy at.  Although funding is more difficult to come by at Madison, I feel as though I have become a much better student and more prepared for the job market by working different jobs on campus and making more connections.  My supervisors are not just bosses, they are people I know to make connections further on in my career.  I’ve also been able to work jobs in which I love what I do, and some that I hate what I do.  Through it all, it has helped me understand what I want to do.
