But the Codes and Keys They Can Protect You

One of the odd things that Sam does for me is give me keychains.  They’re not the “I went to Alaska and got you this keychain” kind of keychains, but ones that are related to sports and things that I love.  It all started sort of by accident, but I am in love with it all either way.

When Sam and I were getting to know one another, the topic of sports came up.  I confessed early on that I rooted for the Brewers and the Red Sox.  I’m a bit of a Boston fan since I love the city, and I couldn’t help but get caught up in the love affair of them winning the Series in 04.  This fact was heavily discussed on end one night in my dorm room in Johnson hall until about four in the morning.

A few weeks later, Sam is out at one of the local “99 cent” stores (honestly, I don’t think anything there cost 99 cents) and found a jar of keychains for sale right by the register.  They were all for baseball teams, which peaked Sam’s interest.  He rummaged through them, not finding a Brewers one in there for himself.  However, he did find a Red Sox one, and knowing my love for the team, he got it for me as a little surprise.

A few days later, Sam comes into my room a bit shy and reserved.  I really didn’t understand until he told me he had something for me.  He rummaged for a bit in his backpack and fished out the keychain.  Instantly, I was so excited he got me something (it was the first gift I received from him), but even happier that he remembered a factoid about me.

There went one keychain on my keys.

This past spring, Sam went to Arizona to watch the Brewers’ spring training.  I was so jealous of the entire experience and wish I could’ve been there myself.  He brought me back a hat, which is amazing, and I thought that was that.  A few weeks after, I was with him and he picked up something and handed it to me without looking.  It was a keychain with the MLB logo on it.  I was thrilled to have it, and it too went onto my keychain.

At this point in my life, the Red Sox keychain fell off twice and seems to not be repairable with the objects in my apartment.

In the winter, Sam and I traveled to the exciting city of Beaver Dam, Wisconsin.  While there, we went perusing the local Shopko.  He found me a Green Bay Packers Super Bowl Champions keychain, which is now proudly displayed on the keyring for my car keys.  I am always happily carrying around those sporty keychains with me wherever I go.

I like to think of them as lucky keychains.
