Opting Out

This year, I am opting out of making new year’s resolutions.

They almost always are broken with a few months.  Instead of creating unrealistic goals for the next 350 or so days, I decided that I was going to follow in Mackenzie Horan‘s feet, and do 101 in 1001.  I’m still looking over my list, which will be unveiled early next week!

The only hold over goal from 2012 that I am continuing is to not eat fast food.  Or, at least to limit it.  My goal is to only dine out one meal a week, and to avoid fast food and its over-processed counterparts.  Therefore, I will bid adieu to ever driving past a fast food window ever again.

What are your resolutions, or lack thereof?  Am I crazy for avoiding this tradition this year or smart to not let myself down?

  1. I never do New Year’s resolutions for the same reason, they are ALWAYS broken, and they are not natural. If you want to change something, you need to do it when you are ready. Not when the calendar says it’s convenient.

Aside from that, this year, I have decided to try something. But I did a lot of planning up to it. It wasn’t just a spur of the moment decision.

I am trying to save more money. I have always been bad with keeping some money. I’ll always pay all my bills and then buy the things I need or want and then be broke by next paycheck. So I decided to try and turn this around.

I found the 52 week money plan, which seems easy enough for me, and it is precise and has a format that I can easily follow. Week 1, deposit $1 into savings. Week 2, $2. Week 3, $3. Etc. At the end of the year, you have saved a little over $1300. Except I doubled it. So I started with $2, then $4, then $6, etc. On top of this, I am electing to move 10% of each check into a separate checking account that I don’t use, to try and save more that way. But I left my options open with this one. By putting it into my checking account, I will do my best to not touch it, but I will not feel guilty if I do.

    Good luck with yours!!!

    • I just saw your post on saving, and I really like the idea! I try to put aside funds each week, whether it be $2 or $100. Let’s hope that we can both be financially better off for 2014!
