I’ve Got the Music in Me

Since I work at Mills Music Library now, I thought it would be appropriate to list all of my favorite online music sites.  Seriously, all of these make me so happy when I’m at work, accessioning new items into the library.

8tracks

I love 8tracks because it is full of pre-created playlists that are determined by genere/mood/etc.  They are all created by the site’s users, and can be played over and over again.  The only issue is that you can only skip three songs per hour on each playlist, but you can switch over to a different playlist without issue.

Grooveshark

At Grooveshark, you can select any song and place it into a playlist.  You are in control of what you listen to, but you can always turn on the radio function to listen to a pre-mixed playlist.  I personally hated the radio since the first song they played was by Nickelback.  Ick.

Stereomood

I love Stereomood because a playlist is developed once you select a mood of music you wish to listen to.  It is one of my favorite ways of finding new music, and you are able to skip to wherever you wish on the playlist.  So great.

A Day In the Life

It’s officially Monday, June 27.  I have decided to blog my entire day, to get an understanding of what a typical day in the summer is for me.  Here goes.

12:55 a.m. — Still awake, not really thinking about sleeping.  Trying to read a few chapters of my “fun read” book and get in a few magazine articles in before I do fall asleep.  I will, without fail, be watching a television show or movie as I fall asleep.  It’s the way I operate.

9:56 a.m. — Getting ready for my day.  Checking out classes online, finishing up some things for work today, and getting myself ready for the day.

11:20 a.m. — Working at University Communications.  My office is located in the basement of Bascom Hall.  I am tossing away tons of older magazines (that were never cataloged), drinking  Odwalla C Monster juice and listening to Paul Simon.  Such a fantastic way to get my day rolling, even though the weather is crummy.

12:05 p.m. — Stopped by Erin’s office (for the Google Book Project) to wish her a happy birthday and drop off her birthday card.  Sadly, she was not in

12:13 p.m. — Working at Mills Music Library in the basement of Memorial.  A co-worker told me I could never be a scarf designer.  We also talked about how you can turn orange if you eat too many carrots.

12:29 p.m. — Just finished getting all of the new books and scores for Mills ready to shelve.  What I do here is make sure the cataloging record is correct and take off their “In Process” status.  I then shelve them in the new book section, count how many new acquisitions I have done, and then re-shelve the books into the stacks after they have been in the library for two or so weeks.  I also get to do rounds up on the Acquisitions floor (Third Floor of Memorial) and grab things from the Marking Room and get the mail for our director.  Pretty exciting.  I really do love working here, even if I am here for a short amount of time in the day, because I am learning the necessary skills to be a librarian that are almost impossible to teach in the classroom.

1:03 p.m. — In my Corporate and Special Information Services course right now.  We’re discussing our guest speakers from last week as well as the tours we took of local special libraries.  I am so excited to talk about the Water Library we went to, and the Geology Library as well.  Marie Dvorzak, the librarian at Geology, absolutely loves her job and it showed with everything she said.  Seeing those who have been in the profession for decades and still loving everything they do gives me a fervor to get into the profession and start making a difference for my patrons.

1:39 p.m. — My favorite time of lecture, the class quotes of the week.  Current favorite: “The best thing about the future is that it comes only one day at a time.”  Abraham Lincoln

2:43 p.m. — Class break is finished.  Now it is time for the guest panelists and their discussion on their careers.  It is an interesting mix of professionals today.

3:10 p.m. — Learning about the history of American Girl.  The nine year old me is freaking out!  Talking about Molly McIntyre right now.

4:09 p.m. — Class has finished, waiting for the 80 bus to take me home.

4:25 p.m. — Home after the bus ride and walk.  Showering quick before heading over to the Nitty Gritty in Middleton for Erin’s birthday.

4:50 p.m. — Leave for the Nitty Gritty.

5:15 p.m. — Finally get to the Nitty Gritty after taking a wrong turn and then driving right past the restaurant.

8:47 p.m. — Got home a bit ago from dinner, which was great.  I loved meeting Erin’s family as well as eating some delicious food.

9:09 p.m. — Talking to Sam on Skype before beginning my homework (and finding where I left my book).  We are currently looking at cute animals on Reddit.  This is the best one he’s found so far.

9:27 p.m. — Getting back into the homework/work routine.  At least I am watching Glee through it all.

10:12 p.m. — Started the second episode of Glee for the night.  Cracked into the second stack of clipsheets.  Have read a lot of news today.

11:15 p.m. — In the middle of the third episode of Glee for the evening.  Going to get onto Parks and Recreation after we’re done with this.  Got a large chunk of clipsheets read for work tomorrow.  Going to take a break and get class readings done.

She Was Physically Forgotten Then She Slipped Into My Pocket

I am a huge Pinterest fan, as mentioned here, and I started to realize that a lot of the craft projects that were on the site could easily be made.  So, here are some of the favorite ideas I found, and how I turned to make them my own.

Magnetic Makeup Display

This was one of the first things I found on Pinterest, and I was so excited to finally get working on this project.

This example had you going to a hardware store, getting some metal, modge podging over it, and then framing the entire thing.  I felt that was a bit overwhelming for me.  Another idea was to use a cookie sheet as a magnetic backing.  I thought of something different…when browsing the craft store.

There was a small, magnetic dry erase board on sale for $2.99.  I got so excited, grabbed it, and ran over to the scrapbooking paper to find something fantastic to cover it with.  The paper cost me $0.20.  Yes, ladies and gents, I found exactly what I was looking for for $3.19.  Whoo hoo.

This is what it looks like now.  I do not have much to magnatize, and one set of the magnets fell off, but this is what it does.  (Note, I swear by Sephora products.  Loooove.)

It works well for now, just getting the magnets to attach is the roughest part.  And yes, I do love that my compact mirror is now magnetic.  Genius, I tell ya.

Memories Jar

I saw it on Pinterest, and this is what the “example piece” was:

I tried to find a set of Mason jars when I was at the craft store, however, I couldn’t find any.  So I grabbed a similar jar from Target (for less than $4) and began the project.  Although it is something easy, I knew I wanted to do it in an organized way.  (Yes, that is how obsessive about organization I am.)  I cut 3×5 index cards in half, and had Sam and I choose different colored pens, that way we knew whose we were reading even before looking at the handwriting.  Here is what ours looks like:

It is pretty empty at the moment, but Sam and I are trying to do two memories each whenever we’re both in Madison together.  I also have the Stabilo pens in there for convenience, as well as already cut up index cards.

This project was extremely simple, and really mostly came from things I had in my apartment.

Wipe Erase Memo Board

I got the originial idea for this from Sarah at Simply Step Back.  However, people all over Pinterest have the same idea pinned.  So here it is.

The Pinterest version:

And my version:

I got the frame on sale for about $3, and the fabric I used is from the ends of pillows I created, so again, another really inexpensive craft project that adds something cute to my room.

I guess that whole yellow-on-white thing is very popular now.  Just dandy.
